The Gabriola Island Singers began as a night school course in 1976 under the direction of Aileen Adam. Alfred Kristiansen conducted for a few years, followed by Gail Lund from 1983 to the present. The Gabriola Island Singers is a community choir of approximately 40 voices. The choir presents concerts at Christmas and in the spring, and sings everything from Bach to contemporary Gabriola composers.
A musical highlight for the Gabriola Island Singers was singing Carmina Burana with Bruce More and his Prima Youth Choir.
The group has hosted choirs from Europe and Africa, and in 2007 added their voices to the “Complaints Choirs of the World”.
Their Complaints Song video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeO-K_qI2w8
Auditions are not required and, although not all members read music, they somehow manage to learn their parts! Wednesday rehearsals provide a stress-free but challenging evening.
