Nanaimo Youth Choir
Nanaimo Youth Choir, a community choir with programs for youth aged five to nineteen years, was founded in 1992 by artistic director Marian Smith in affiliation with the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music. The choir consists of two groups: the Junior Youth Choir for children aged 5-14 with little or no musical experience, and the Concert Choir for girls and boys with unchanged voices and some musical experience through choir or private instruction.
Nanaimo Youth Choir regularly participates in concerts in Nanaimo and beyond and has been a consistent winner in the Upper Island Music Festival. The choir presents concerts for schools one day each spring at the Port Theatre. NYC participated in the first Calgary Children's Choir Festival and in the World of Children's Choirs in Vancouver where they sang with 2000 choristers from around the world. Choir members travel regularly to BC Choral Federation Chorfests to participate with other young choristers from BC.
In 2002 and more recently in 2010, Nanaimo Youth Choir was proud to represent Nanaimo at the BC Festival of the Arts. The choristers were very excited to bring home provincial honours once again.
The choristers love to sing and perform, and many lifelong friendships are formed within the groups. Their young accompanists Cassidy Stachow and Liam Pistor are members of the choir who either sing or play depending on the needs of the choir. Entrance to the Concert Choir is by audition.
